Is a Labradoodle, Goldendoodle or North American Retriever (Double Doodle) the Right Dog for You?
If you are looking for a smart, intuitive, athletic, devoted, trainable, clown that thrives on human companionship, then a Goldendoodle, Labradoodle or Double Doodle (also known as a North American Retriever) might be for you. They are social and pack oriented, and with proper training, your family will become their pack. Because of their intelligence, all Doodle puppies require consistent training throughout their first year, and benefit from ongoing training. It is the best way to strengthen the relationship with your dog!
Labradoodles, Goldendoodles and Double Doodles are dogs that are able to observe that everyone has rules, and a place in the pack, and they need you to teach them THEIR place in the pack. A Doodle puppy without proper training will become frustrated and develop undesirable behaviors. They need human companionship and do not do well left alone all day every day unless they get plenty of attention in the evenings! Undesirable behaviors like barking or destructive chewing will develop if they do not get the attention they require.
Labradoodles and Goldendoodles are derived from breeds originally used for hunting, so they do require some exercise every day. If you are willing to teach your Doodle puppy basic rules of good dog citizenship, spend time with your companion every day, and provide your canine athlete with daily activity, you will be rewarded with, quite possibly, the perfect dog! Not all Doodles are created equally, however. If a Doodle puppy's lines include those intended for hunting, they will be higher energy than those bred for the show ring. It is up to the breeder to choose lines with the energy level they are striving for, and up to you to ask plenty of questions to make sure their puppies match your family's activity level. At Westwood I have spent 15 years consistently producing Doodles with medium energy...active enough to go for a run or enjoy a game of fetch, but mellow enough to cuddle on the couch.
