All About Double Doodles (North American Retrievers)
North American Retrievers, also known as 'Double Doodles', are the up and coming hybrid! A North American Retriever is the hybridization of a Labradoodle with a Goldendoodle. Onlya few breeders have begun doing this, and Westwood Doodles is on the cutting edge of this hybrid movement.
As with any hybrid, one of the first and most important questions to be asked is, "why"? Hybridization should be done only if there is a clear goal in mind.
In this case, we are striving to do what many service organizations have been doing for years....combine the people-oriented, personable character of the Golden Retriever with the work ethic and energy of the Labrador Retriever. Service organizations have been breeding and using the Golden/Lab mixes with great success for quite some time. They have GREAT temperaments. However, as with both Labs and Goldens, they are not a good choice for those suffering from an allergy to dogs. That's where the poodle comes in! Our Goldendoodles and Labradoodles have been bred to include the low allergy, non-shed coat qualities of the Poodle.
As it turns out, our litters of Double Doodles have been even more successful than we had hoped. We have found the percentage of pups with low-allergy, non-shedding coats in our Double Doodle litters to be MUCH higher than in either Labradoodle litters or Goldendoodle litters. In addition, the temperaments have been outstanding, although this is not a surprise as we carefully chose our breeding stock for trainable temperament. Below are some pictures of some of our North American Retriever pups.
